Songspiration Friday-Dear Avery by the Decemberists

Yep, you read that right. I'm finally getting back to some kind of schedule. Or at least trying to. A while back I dusted off my first manuscript. The characters name was Zander but she is very fragile and the name didn't fit. So, I tried to figure out what I could rename my character. Then I listened to this song, Dear Avery. I fell in love with the name and this song is a part of the MS now. The Decemberists are an adopted Portland band and the lead singer, Colin Meloy, has actually written a book. I still haven't read it but his wife designed the cover and it's divine.

Here is the song. Dear Avery by the Decemberists.

No story to go with it. LOL. I have been busy writing Goodbye Avery (I threw the whole MS out the window and started over, but I'm getting close to the end) And beta reading some SUPER awesome books.

So, what inspires the names of your characters? Have you ever switched a character's name after finishing the whole book?

  1. Most of my characters come with a name attached or the name presents itself while writing. I have changed names but never after being done with a whole book. I know publishers do suggest it sometimes so I'm trying to keep an open mind about it.

  2. I have switched many character names after the book is written but never the main character. I'm usually pretty particular about that one when I begin. I love this song! Thanks for sharing it! I just hung out with my friend's little girl whose name is Avery! :)

  3. Great song and awesome name. I have switched names at the end before, but not for main characters. I stalk those baby name websites like a new mother for name inspiration. :)
